Some things you just do hang on to. Someone in the family has hung onto this newspaper for 208 - yes two hundred and eight years. It has been given a coat of something to preserve it. Digging we found the importance of the newspaper article.which is reporting the victory at Trafalgar and the death of Nelson.
The newspaper is the London Times November 7th 1805
The Battle of Trafalgar was fought on 21 October 1805 off Cape Trafalgar on the Spanish coast, between the Royal Navy and the combined fleets of Spain and France.
Nelson was killed by a shot in the shoulder that broke his spine, but survived to witness the British victory and reportedly died with the words "Thank God I have done my duty".
This excerpt, from the beginning of a passage describing how Nelson and some of the men round him coped with their injuries, reads:
'LORD NELSON'S LAST MOMENTSWHEN LORD NELSON was shot, and was yet in the arms of the men who were supporting him, his eye caught the tiller rope, which was unusually slack; he exclaimed, with much emphasis "Tighten that rope there!" an eminent proof that his professional ardour still survived the brilliancy of the flame of life. When he saw his Secretary and his friend, Mr SCOTT, thrown overboard, uncertain of the disfigurement of the wound and the confusion of the fight whether it was him or not, he inquired, with affectionate ardour "Was that poor Scott?" An impression seems to be made on Lord NELSON, for as the men were carrying him down to the cockpit he said "Don't let me be thrown overboard; tell Hardy to carry me home."A man was so completely cut in two by a double-headed shot, that the whole of his body, with the exception of his legs up to his knees, was blown some yards into the water; but, strange to tell, his legs were left standing on the deck with all the firmness and animation of life!A midshipman, of the name of PRICE, was brought into the cockpit, with his leg cut off up to the calf; he was a heroic youth of 17. The surgeons could not attend to him at the moment. He drew out a knife, and cut off a piece of flesh and the splinter of the bone with great composure. "I can stay," said he; "let me doctor myself." When the surgeon attended him it was found neccessary to amputate above the knee. He submitted to the operation without a groan. "It is nothing at all," he said; "I thought it had become much worse." FarmStay Guests.
Sorry I didn't get photos of the cats visiting today (I try most days ) All are fine - just with visitors I got a bit out of routine.
Brent was busy putting art work that MandaBurms Owners have given to us into frames. Brent is going to hang them in the cattery for me so more people can enjoy them. Most people bringing their cats to stay don't come into the house.
The cattery is going to look rather posh!
We love getting photo updates of the cats we have bred
Dear Leanne and Brent, thought we would drop a short email to
wish you all the best for 2013. We see from your blog you are all well. Your
new cat run looks fantastic. We so enjoy reading your blogs. Thanks for
sharing.
Bruno is well and is catching lots of bunnies. He also has a
lot of fun stalking my chickens but never harms them.
Attached is a photo of Bruno on Jessie's horse. He loves to
follow Jessie all over the property.
All the very best to you and your family for
2013.
Kind Regards
Loraine, Marty, Jessie, Oscar and Bruno

Leanne, part of the joy of having guests, either feline, family, friends, or visitors, is getting a message after they leave, it is so rewarding.Your newspaper clipping, it might be very valuable??Add to the trademe account??? Cheers from Jean
ReplyDeleteJean some things you just don't sell, the kids might down track but if this has been saved by a family member (I wonder who?) for 208 years Brent and I aren't going to be the ones to break that tradition.
DeleteGlad you are ok!!!! You had quite a trip didn't you.
Love Leanne
I just love the Nelson article ... I so agree with you ... these things don't have a money value but help us to remember where we came from .... I have such a hankering for the ancient Celts ... you know they started in Eastern Europe and wound up in the British Isles ... I hope that someday I can "remember" because I know I'm a Celt in my soul and at the very heart of me.
ReplyDeleteLove always,
Jan
Keep that clipping for at least another 2008 years, from one generation to the next. Cute photo of the black kitty napping on the horse.
ReplyDeleteHa ha, I meant to type 208 years, though 2,008 would be good too.
ReplyDeleteLeanne I think you know that we do framing in our shop so we know a bit about archival materials. The newspaper won't deteriorate too much in future if it's stored in a non-acid environment. Mylar folders are excellent for this purpose, you should be able to get one at your office supply store.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a few more years with the news paper won't hurt!! That cat on the horse, he's so comfy looking!!
